WHAT IS A MACHINIST?
Machinists set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. This includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify or repair mechanical instruments. Machinists may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines. They must apply their knowledge of mechanics, math, metal properties, layout and machining procedures.

WHAT DO MACHINISTS DO?
Read blueprints, sketches or computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files
Set up, operate and disassemble manual, automatic and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools
Align, secure and adjust cutting tools and work pieces.
Turn, mill, drill, shape and grind machine parts to specifications.
Measure, examine and test completed products for defects.
Present finished work pieces to customers and make modifications if needed.
